 Working under palm trees

Let your dream come true and find a job in Dubai. Many students and professionals are dreaming of a job in Dubai. The continuous growing economy in the UAE provides great job opportunities for job seekers around the world. However, local conditions in terms of different employment laws and contracts, salary, leave, business practices, etc. apply and have to be considered.

 Students / Internship

Add something extraordinary to your CV! Nowadays international and intercultural experience is a must for students to position themselves as high potentials on the job market. Dubai offers the best chance for students to gain work experience in a multi-cultural environment with more than 100 nationalities working together.

However, being an intern in Dubai is an expensive venture. The following issues have to be considered for a successful internship in Dubai:

- Rents: room prices range from 4,000-6,000 Dhs in a Villa in Jumeirah (one of the better locations in Dubai), minimum price for a suitable room for western expats in other areas is 3,500 Dhs per month. It is very important to chose your location according to your workplace. Traffic in Dubai is crazy and it can easily take 2 to 3 hours during rushhour to get home when it usually takes 15 minutes.

- Car: public transportation does not cover many areas in Dubai. It is strongly recommended to rent a car during your stay. Prices start from 1,500 Dhs for a small car when you book directly in Dubai. Prices between car rental companies don't vary much.

- Other living costs: prices for groceries are a little lower than in Europe/US, gas, water and electricity are way cheaper.

- Salary: An average monthly income for interns working for international companies in Dubai in 2006 was around 3,000-5,000 Dhs. However, many companies don't pay salary, while others offer accomodation and a car instead of paying wages. Thus working as a student in Dubai is an expensive venture but the benefits are worth taking this obstacle.

- Visa: Working on a tourist visa in the United Arab Emirates is forbidden according to the law. Your company should provide you with a working permit and the associated visa. However, many interns are woking on tourist visas. It is your own decision whether you want to take that risk. To prolong your tourist visa (usually issued for two months) you need to leave the UAE and enter the country again (e.g. by travelling to neighbouring Oman).

How to find a job:

The best way to find a job is by travelling to the UAE and establish direct contacts with companies. There are networking meetings all the time where you can find interesting contacts that are able to refer you to different companies (>>networking).
If you don't have the chance to travel to the UAE beforehand you might look up companies in the national directory (>>abcbusinesspages).
Another way is to establish contacts through networking web sites like xing.com (you can join a huge middle east forum there for free) or online job searches.

Please submit your CV to Dubai Business Portal.
Through our contacts there is a good chance for a placement. Fees for mediation are EUR400/USD550 and only have to be paid after you signed an employment contract. Always submit your salary expectations! Remember: many companies aren't paying any salary so the lower your requirements the higher your chances to find a job.

 Professionals

Dubai offers great job opportunities for professionals. About 20 new companies are established in Dubai per week and there is a huge demand on skilled workforce. Many national and international companies especially in Dubai's free zones are offering interesting and well paid jobs.

Many factors may vary to the business and private environment of your home country and therefore have to be considered:

- Rents: room prices range from 4,000-6,000 Dhs in a Villa in Jumeirah (one of the better locations in Dubai), minimum price for a suitable room for western expats in other areas is 3,500 Dhs per month. Prices for 2 bedroom villas start at 120,000 Dhs/year; 2 bedroom apparments from 80,000 Dhs/year (2006 average). It is very important to chose your location according to your workplace. Traffic in Dubai is crazy and it can easily take 2 to 3 hours during rushhour to get home when it usually takes 15 minutes.

- Car: public transportation does not cover many areas in Dubai. It is strongly recommended to rent or buy a car during your stay. Rental prices start from 1,500 Dhs for a small car when you book directly in Dubai. Prices between car rental companies don't vary much. Many international companies provide their staff with a car.

- Other living costs: prices for groceries are a little lower than in Europe/US, gas, water and electricity are way cheaper.

- Salary: Varies according to skills, job position, job experience and company. For graduates with little job experience a reasonable monthly income would be in the range of 9,000 to 13,000 Dhs. Professionals with work experience might get expatriate packages which are usually very attractive (including housing, transportation, etc.).

- Visa: Working on a tourist visa in the United Arab Emirates is forbidden according to the law. Your company should provide you with a working permit and the associated visa.
